Define what speed is S5FE-IIIa-1.7 (Activity Sheet)

SPEED

Learning Competencies :
The learners should be able to:
1. Define what speed is  S5FE-IIIa-1.7
2. Explain how to compute the speed of an object in motion S5FE-IIIa-1.8
3. Compute for the speed of an object by dividing distance travelled by time  S5FE-IIIa-1.9

Let’s See What You Already Know
Write True if the concept is correct and False if it is wrong.
______ 1. Objects need force to be in motion.
______ 2. Objects in motion always change in position.
______ 3. A reference point must move along with the object in motion.
______ 4. Anything that stays stationary can be used as reference point.
______ 5. Motion refers to the changing position of an object

Directions/ Instructions
Perform the experiment by following the procedures indicated below. Complete all the activities after.

Let’s Try This and Self- Check
  Materials:
meter stick                two bottle filled with water                  timer                     3 model pupils
Procedure:
1. Look for a place where you can walk for more than 10 meters from one point to another.
2. Mark the empty bottles as A and B to be used as your reference points.
3. Assign three pupils who can walk from starting point to the 10 –meter point.
4. Put bottle A at the starting point and measure up to 10 meters. Put bottle B at the 10
5. Let the model pupil # 1 walk in normal pace from bottle A towards bottle B while the timekeeper take note of the time in seconds. Record the number of seconds that the model has walked from bottle A to bottle B. Let the model pupil # 2 and 3 do step 6 and record the number of seconds.
6. record your observations in the table:
model distance time speed
Pupil 1
Pupil 2
Pupil 3

7. Answer the following questions:
c. Who among the pupils walked the fastest?  ________________;  Slowest? ________________
d. What is the average distance walked by the models? __________________________________
e. What is the average time spent in walking? _________________________________________
f. What is the average speed of the motion? ___________________________________________
g. How did you determine the speed? Average speed? __________________________________
8. Base on your observation, define SPEED.

Let’s Study and Analyze
Direction: Read and answer each problem.
1. You went on a car trip to a town in Nueva Ecija. It took you four hours to cover a distance of 284 kilometers. What was your average speed?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________

2. You covered a distance of 120 Kilometers at a speed of 60 km/hr. how long was your trip?

Remember This
The distance covered by a moving object is affected by its speed, or the measure of how fast it moves. The faster it moves, the shorter time it takes for it to cover a certain distance.
Speed can be calculated by dividing the distance covered by an object in motion by the amount of time it used to cover the distance.

Let’s See What You Have Learned
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. What is the speed of the ball that moves to about 10 meters in 2 seconds?
              A. 5 m/s                B. 20 m/s                  C. 1 m/s                      D. 50 m/s
2. Which is a unit of speed?
              A. m/s                    B. s                          C. kg                           D. hr
3. If you travel 80km in 2 hours, what was your average speed?
A. 10 km/h             B. 40 km/h               C. 20 km/h                  D. 4 km/ h
4. Which of the following shows a fast speed?
A. 5 m/s                 B. 4 m/s                   C. 2 km/h                    D. 1 km/h
 5. If a person walked at 2 m/s for 12 seconds he/she would travel a distance of______________.
               A. 6 m                    B. 3 m                      C.4 m                          D. 24 m

II.  Explain how to compute SPEED.
